Nicole P. Stott started out as a operations engineer at KSC in one of NASA’s Orbiter Processing Facilities. Throughout its history with NASA it has been known as the Astronaut Beach House or simply The Beach House. The shuttle program was set for retirement after another shuttle, Columbia, disintegrated on reentry in 2003, and NASA reprioritized missions to complete construction of the International Space Station. In the early days, during NASA’s Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Programs, astronauts were allowed to spend overnight at the beach house, but the rules changed during the shuttle era.
