Throughout its history with NASA it has been known as the Astronaut Beach House or simply The Beach House. The shuttle program was set for retirement after another shuttle, Columbia, disintegrated on reentry in 2003, and NASA reprioritized missions to complete construction of the International Space Station. In the early days, during NASA’s Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Programs, astronauts were allowed to spend overnight at the beach house, but the rules changed during the shuttle era. Departing shuttle crews were taken to the beach house for a barbecue or picnic, and then left alone for some private time with their loved ones before they taken into mandatory quarantine before the launch.

Proudly displayed within its spartan interior is a glass case with an array of wine and champagne bottles signed by various astronauts. There are three remaining authentic Saturn V rockets on display, and all are displayed horizontally. In a milestone, the Los Angeles home of the retired space shuttle Endeavour broke ground Wednesday on a permanent museum, which ultimately envisions the spacecraft displayed as if ready for launch.
